WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR

Job Description: Water Safety Instructors are responsible for planning and conducting swimming lessons in both group and private formats. This includes lesson planning, communication with clients, and proper reporting of classes.

Location: Cary Street Gym & MCV Larrick Student Center

Supervisor: Mathew Scott

Starting Pay Rate:$17.00/hour

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Teach American Red Cross swimming & water safety courses to adult and youth audiences in both private and group lesson formats
  • Adapt your teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants so they can meet course objectives
  • Ensure the health and safety of the participants by making sure all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and materials and equipment are safe
  • Communicate regularly with participants and/or parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility emergency action plan
  • Complete records and reports in a timely manner
  • Participate in instructor development meetings and training sessions
  • Provide positive and constructive feedback to participants
  • Develop appropriate participant/instructor relationships
  • Maintain up-to-date records for all private and semi-private lesson clients, including schedule and progress logs
  • Maintain a written lesson plan for all group lessons
  • Be enthusiastic and have fun
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics & Safety Coordinator or Program Assistant
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills
  • Thorough knowledge and application of teaching strategies and techniques
  • Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with adults and youth
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to adapt to various situations that may arise while teaching
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Maturity & professionalism
Required Certification(s):

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Preferred Certification(s):
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers & First Aid
