Chief of Police

Serves as chief law enforcement officer for the Town of Bedford (population 6,600 and growing), which is located in the Central Virginia area between
Roanoke and Lynchburg. There are several exciting developments underway in the community, including the development of a new Police Department facility and a scheduled expansion of Town boundaries in 2023.

The department is a CALEA and state-accredited agency with 24 sworn officers and 3 non-sworn personnel. Responsibilities include managing all activities of the department. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, progressive law enforcement professional who has the skills and capacity for collaborative leadership, employee development and community partnerships.

The community has high expectations related to engagement and involvement by the department. The position requires either a bachelor's degree from a fully accredited institution of higher learning in law enforcement, public or business administration, or a related field. Possession of a master's degree is a plus. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience is strongly preferred, some of which should be in a command level/management capacity. Experience related to maintenance of CALEA accreditation is important. Grant writing and administration skills are highly valued. Completion of the FBI National Academy and/or training offered by the Senior Management Institute for Police is also preferred. There is no residency requirement associated with the position, although availability to the community at all hours is a minimum expectation associated with the position. Must have or be able to obtain a Virginia driver's license within 30 days and possess or obtain a DCJS law enforcement certificate as well as meet and maintain state and local requirements for the position. Must meet physical requirements as well as participate in drug screening and psychological examination.

HIRING RANGE: $75,800-$101,100 annually plus excellent benefits including paid sick and vacation leave, participation in Virginia Retirement System, and full coverage of individual health insurance premiums.
