Simulation and Skills Lab Technician Job Description

Description: Coordinates and manages the nursing program’s simulation and skills lab. The individual in this position will assure the effective and efficient operation of the lab, will assess, and provide for meeting program and student needs, and oversee the operation of high, medium and low fidelity technology to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation equipment.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a medical related field or 3-5 years of experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Certified in American Heart Association BLS CPR
  •  Previous experience in simulation laboratory training, preferred
  • Skills in acute care, knowledge of simulation techniques, and knowledge and understanding of human pathophysiology, preferred
  • Possess the skills and ability to train the students, faculty, and clinical staff on simulation equipment
  • The ability to facilitate laboratory resources, including human patient simulation equipment and supplies, for internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to support nursing students as well as other healthcare students and a variety of other groups from the general population, for example high school students
  • Strong skills in the application of technology
  • Excellent organizational, intrapersonal and communication skills
  • Work effectively as a team member
  • Identification with the educational mission and values of the College and ADN program
  • The ability to manage projects and prioritize tasks

Additional Requirements Education:

  • Participates with and assists faculty in the development, implementation, and integration of simulation activities for nursing students
  • Monitors and schedules use, signing out, and movement of simulation lab equipment
  • Assists faculty to develop, present, and refine scenarios for simulation experiences, utilizing role playing, props and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment
  • Develops and implements clinical simulation to meet accreditation standards
  • Creates and maintains a respectful and professional working environment, incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process
  • Assists faculty to perform data analysis to evaluate learning and satisfaction with the provision of services
  • Continuously updates and refines simulation experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities
  • Maintains the lab inventory, ensures the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Monitors and assures appropriate standards of lab cleanliness, provides for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement
  • Orients faculty in lab procedures, location and use of materials, and operation of equipment
  • Oversees simulation lab information and technology support
  • Assists Director of Nursing Program to formulate budget recommendations related to lab needs
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment, complies with Mesalands’ health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulation
  • Model’s professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, and attendance
  • Participates in or leads tours of the simulation laboratory
  • Provides instructional support in the simulation lab for students and faculty to improve competencies and skills in meeting course objectives through simulation
  • Schedules and coordinates simulation activities for each nursing course, as requested by course faculty
  • Collaborates with appropriate individuals for scheduling use of simulation lab and nursing skills lab
  • Coordinates remediation of nursing skills for students when requested by faculty
  • Seeks opportunities to maintain professional competence related to simulation and healthcare
  • Maintains and updates simulation lab to include, but not limited to identifying software; supply and equipment needs; monitoring simulation equipment; troubleshooting and resolving problems
  • Maintains records of all simulation activities including, but not limited to number of students participating; number of faculty participating; number of hospital employees participating; video release forms; video recording of simulation events
  • Works closely with college faculty/staff to appropriately integrate lab operations, obtain maximum utilization for the most efficient expenditure, and to moderate student costs
  • Any other duties as may be appropriately assigned or required by the Nursing Program Director

Attendance

The individual in this position is expected to be generally present and available throughout the year during the normal business hours of the college and may occasionally have work obligations outside of the college’s normal business hours.

Conditions are those of a typical office, classroom, healthcare environment, requiring frequent oral and written communication with college employees, students, and vendors, the presentation of information on-line and in face-to-face settings, and the ability to enter data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner.
