- Summary
- The Building Operations Services Section (BOS) of the Facilities Management Division (FMD) is looking for a journey-level Facilities Carpenter I that cares about providing excellent customer service, enjoys working on a team, and takes pride in the buildings we maintain. Our ideal candidate will have journey-level carpentry experience performing maintenance, repair, and construction work in large facilities. The ability to perform general carpentry duties such as roofing, masonry, and lock repair and maintenance experience is highly desirable.
WHO ARE WE?
Building Operations Section (BOS) is responsible for custodial services, maintenance, and building operations as well as building security. BOS is committed to providing high quality service to effectively and efficiently support and maintain King County's buildings.
BOS maintains approximately 3 million square feet in facilities where King County provides regional services including the King County Courthouse, District Courts, Maleng Regional Justice Center, King County Administration Building, King County Animal Shelter, and several Public Health facilities. Our facilities range in age from 8 to 100 years with equipment and assets that represent a similar age range.

SCOPE OF DUTIES: Successful candidates will demonstrate skill and/or ability at a minimum to:
- Structural Components:
- Perform preventative maintenance and correctional repairs of facility structural components including guardrails, fences, decks, floors, walls, drywall, acoustical tiles and siding, ceilings, and roofs etc.
- Windows and Doors:
- Troubleshoot, install, and repair doors, windows, and related hardware i.e. lock mechanisms, closures, keying systems and re-glazing.
- Cabinetry:
- Build, install, repair and maintain finish materials including cabinets, millwork, tile, plastic-laminate, furniture, signs and partitions.
- Masonry:
- Maintain interior and exterior concrete and masonry structures.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Operate and maintain a variety of carpentry hand and power tools and equipment.
- Customer Service:
- Provide excellent customer service to tenants, pedestrians, coworkers, and fellow county departments.
- Planning and Execution:
- Work independently and/or collaboratively with fellow coworkers, trades, vendors, and departments.
- Communicate complex carpentry ideas and issues to multiple audiences both verbally and in writing.
- Assess, research, and recommend solutions for facility carpentry needs with assistance from coworkers and leads as needed.
- Safety and Training
- Perform safe working practices and promote a safe working environment
- Commitment to ongoing safety and trade training opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR CANDIDATES WHO HAS:
- Completed an accepted carpentry apprenticeship program or two years of carpentry trade experience under the direction of a journey level carpenter (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
- Basic mathematics formulas skills and construction terminology.
- Journey-level knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in carpentry as well as the skills required to use those tools and materials.
- Comprehensive knowledge of building and site components.
- Intermediate skills with computers i.e. Microsoft Outlook and work order systems.
- The ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing, work collaboratively with other work units and clients, and assess and plan work tasks and provide status updates.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas and issues to multiple audiences both verbally and in writing.
- The ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, specifications and written instruction in order to complete projects.
- Safety consciousness with the ability to identify safety concerns and resolve them on site or escalate as needed.
- Professional and safe work practice experience.
- Strong experience with finish work.
- A highly motivated desire to provide high standard carpentry work.
- Excellent customer service skills and experience.
POSITION INFORMATION:
- This recruitment is open to the general public, however King County Career Service union members interested in a lateral transfer will be considered first. This recruitment is an effort to fill our immediate vacancies as well as create a hire list that will be used for any positions that become vacant within the next 12 months.
- This position is required to be on a paid rotating standby list for non-duty days such as weekends and holidays.
- Main office locations include King County Courthouse in Downtown Seattle and/or the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
- Historically this position is scheduled to work a Monday – Friday, 6:55 a.m. – 3:25 p.m. schedule. This schedule may vary and is subject to change dependent upon operational needs. The position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime-eligible.
- Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek.
- This position is represented by the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, 30.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
- The selected applicant must also possess a valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.
- Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing a stringent and thorough federal and county background investigation and clearing a pre-employment physical examination.
- This position has been designated as Emergency Responders meaning an employee designated by their department leadership who provides for and maintains the functions of county essential services.
