The HVAC Technician I performs basic level work in the maintenance of the College's HVAC systems. Primary responsibilities include the cleaning, greasing, and replacing of belts and filters; and recording and reporting time, materials, faults, deficiencies, or other unusual occurrences. The HVAC Technician I accompanies skilled HVAC technicians in system repairs; ensures tools and materials are available at the job sites; and assists in performing chemical testing and treatment of boiler feed water. This position assists with monitoring and maintaining high-pressure boilers, and responds appropriately to emergencies; escalating issues to the appropriate parties as needed.
Specific Responsibilities
• Performs basic level work in the maintenance of the College's HVAC systems; including the cleaning, greasing, and replacement of belts, fans and filters.
• Accompanies HVAC Technicians II and III in responding to system repairs under variable job conditions and provides assistance as directed.
• Assists skilled technicians with maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment and components based on manufacturer recommendations, i.e. valves, motors, belts, bearings, filters, and lubrication.
• Performs basics of equipment management controls to start, stop, seek status or change conditions on HVAC systems via computer.
• Assists skilled technicians with maintaining compressors, condensers, etc. on split system, a self-contained conditioning system, and large fans.
• Maintains and secures a spare parts inventory.
• Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies.
• Makes basic repairs and assists with maintaining the institutional heating plant.
• Makes basic repairs and assists with maintaining cooling towers, chillers, condenser/chiller water pumps and refrigeration equipment.
• Makes basic repairs and assists with maintaining VAV systems, diffusers, thermostats and heating coils.
• Under the guidance of skilled technicians, assists with institutional renovation HVAC projects, as directed by the supervisor.
• Assists in the maintenance and repair of pneumatic and electrical control equipment and instruments.
• Assists with monitoring and maintaining high pressure boilers; and assists skilled technicians in performing the chemical testing and treatment of boiler feed water.
• Records and reports time, materials, faults, deficiencies, or other unusual occurrences on work orders.
• Maintains knowledge of all HVAC equipment and locations.
• Travels to the College's regional centers to support routine maintenance repair requests, and various other projects, as needed.
• Delivers parts and materials to various sites around campus and at the College's regional locations.
• Complies with all applicable standards, policies, or procedures, such as safety procedures or the maintenance of a clean work area.
• Delivers quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.
• Communicates emergency situations promptly to the Facilities leadership team and update the status of work orders in the department's work order system.
• Maintains sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse environment inclusive of students, faculty and staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training in HVAC required.
• Ability to keep up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge to the duties of the position.
• Ability to follow instructions with accuracy.
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the trade required.
• Ability to monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess HVAC basic problems.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively and focus on completion of tasks.
• Ability to work in inclement weather; any assigned shift including weekends, night and holidays required.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving history required.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative, be self-directed and work for periods of time without supervision required.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
• The ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling work related materials and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
• Professional work experience maintaining HVAC systems preferred.
