The City will pay a Lateral Level hiring bonus of $6,000 to experienced Police Officers.
Tuition Reimbursement
The Police Department encourages its licensed Police personnel, or aspiring to become licensed Police personnel, to prepare for success within the Department through educational development and personal growth. The City may share the cost of education which directly relates to the performance of the employee in the employee's present assignment which prepares the employee for advancement with the City in the foreseeable future, up to an annual maximum cost of $5,000.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Police Sergeants and Deputy Police Chief this position is responsible, during a specified period of time, for the maintenance of order, enforcement of laws, and protection of life and property. This position also assists in the investigation of criminal offenses, accidents, and other police-related problems.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to complaints such as prowlers, trespass, fights, domestics, alarms, etc.
- Handle arrest situations and procedures.
- Drive patrol car to monitor traffic; operate communication equipment and vehicle monitoring equipment such as radar; observe and detect traffic violations; and operate vehicle in emergency mode.
- Patrol assigned area by vehicle.
- Write detailed reports to document activities in situations requiring that public order be maintained and/or restored.
- Answer questions from the public on the phone or in person regarding issues such as project status, complaints, and law interpretation, or refer citizens to proper agencies.
- Face threatening situations and be prepared to use deadly force when justified.
- OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Search areas for suspects.
- Take written and oral statements from victims and witnesses.
- Request checks on car registrations, warrants, and firearms, and issue tickets, citations, and tags for illegal violations.
- Make business checks or vacation checks of private dwellings.
- Monitor crime areas by vehicle or foot patrol.
- Complete routine, non-emergency reports and initial investigative reports.
- Interview suspects, witnesses, citizens, victims, and others as required.
- Interrogate suspects and take sworn statements, formal confessions, or depositions in preparation for court or trial appearances.
- Maintain skills proficiency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of police principles, practices, procedures, purposes, tools, techniques, and equipment, especially as applicable to duties of assignments.
- Knowledge of relevant laws, rules, and regulations.
- Skill in the use of firearms and vehicles.
- Ability to apply police principles, practices, and procedures to solve police problems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to meet and deal with the public tactfully, with courtesy, or, when the occasion demands, with firmness.
- Ability to withstand adverse weather conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Associates Degree in Law Enforcement or related field.
- US Citizen.
- Must have, or be qualified to obtain, a valid Minnesota driver's license.
- POST Board licensed or eligible to be licensed.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement or related field.
- One year of experience in law enforcement, either a sworn, non-sworn, or volunteer position.
- Fluent in a second language.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
