Job Description Summary:

Water Treatment

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on water treatment plant equipment and facilities, to maintain plant buildings and grounds, and to perform related duties as required.

As a member of the Water Treatment Maintenance team, supports the efforts of a several work groups within the larger customer service-oriented Utilities group and provides support in a collaborative manner to foster teamwork and coordination within and across the Water Treatment, Water Resources, and Water Quality teams.

Job Description:

WATER TREATMENT

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair on treatment plant equipment. This includes the following:
    • Troubleshoots, repairs, and overhauls pumps, motors, valves, chemical feeders, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, boilers, electrical generators, and other mechanical equipment.
    • Performs preventive maintenance duties, such as filter, belt, & oil replacements.
  • Performs corrective maintenance activities and special projects.
  • Performs or assists in tank/basin/sump cleanings, as well as solid and liquid material handling.
  • Assists I/C Technicians with maintenance, repair, and calibration tasks on treatment plant electronic and electrical operating systems, instrumentation, switch gear, and related equipment.
  • Estimates equipment repair costs and downtime. May recommend contracting repairs.
  • Improvises repairs during emergency situations to keep facility equipment and electrical systems operational to maintain compliance with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.
  • Updates Plant Operators and other plant personnel regarding equipment problems.
  • Maintains records of work performed. Completes appropriate maintenance forms and enters preventive maintenance data into computerized maintenance system. Also assists in general data entry and review of data entered into the computerized maintenance system.
  • Maintains facility buildings and grounds, including off-site utilities facilities. Performs general housekeeping, equipment cleaning, minor structural repairs and construction, painting, and assists with landscape maintenance. Miscellaneous repair work includes minor plumbing needs (restroom, kitchen), and interior office repairs (furniture, doors, etc.).
  • Maintains inventory of parts for equipment, orders and purchases materials, supplies, and tools. Purchases supplies and replacement parts as necessary. Coordinates delivery of parts.
  • Assists in the modification of existing plant equipment to meet plant requirements.
  • Maintains the organization and cleanliness of the maintenance shop, including tools and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Remains generally alert to conditions and events occurring at the water treatment plants indicating anticipated or needed repairs and makes related recommendations.
  • Works in confined spaces that require ventilation to protect against dangerous gases and fumes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the department and city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Required to wear protective safety gear and use safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.
  • Is accountable for time spent on the job. Responsible for entering time, filing work related paperwork such as expense reports, time entry, invoices, etc.

  • Valid driver's license. Have and maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in water/wastewater or industrial plant maintenance.
  • Experience in welding, pipe fitting, blueprint reading, electrical troubleshooting and/or similar maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of industrial electrical equipment, control systems/electronics, HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical systems up to 480V. Journeyman-level training as electrician, millwright, plumber or similar trade.
  • Experience in maintaining computerized maintenance records/systems.
  • Knowledge of local building codes.
  • Colorado Water Treatment Plant Operator's Certification, and/or Colorado Water Distribution System Operator Certification.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Physical and Mental Effort

Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an indoor and outdoor environment, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to work in odorous, dirty conditions associated with a Wastewater Treatment Facility. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an industrial setting. Work will include periods of time viewing a computer monitor and operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, and changing priorities and conditions. Physical ability to work in and around equipment in an industrial setting, in areas of areas of limited access, elevated structures, and confined spaces requiring standing, walking, lifting, bending and kneeling; ability to use ladders, stairs, underground vaults, cat walks, and scaffolding; ability to lift 50 pounds; ability to hear audible alarms at 80 DB and higher; visual acuity, manual dexterity in using precision and non-precision hand tools, power tools, and technical devices. Knowledge of industry safety standards, regulations, and equipment.

Work Environment

Works primarily in an industrial environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. May work in permit required confined spaces that require ventilation and other measures to protect against dangerous gases and fumes.

Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following: Precision and non-precision hand and power tools (electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic), stationary tools such as drill press and lathe; welder; diagnostic equipment; precision measuring devices. Office equipment including computers, telephone, photocopy machine, calculator, and City vehicle.
